The Indian Cotton Mills’ Federation (ICMF) established in 1958 had been the apex body of the organized textile mill industry of India. It represented all the spinning and weaving mills including composite mills producing textile goods in the Country. Different regional associations having membership of more than 2700 textile mills all over the country were members of the Federation. The Federation felt the need to convert itself into an umbrella organization representing all the segments of the textile and clothing sector of India including cotton mills, man made spinning and weaving units, woollen mills, units manufacturing garments, and all such other units which are in production of textile and allied goods. On the basis of extensive consultations within the industry, we changed the name of The Indian Cotton Mills’ Federation to “CONFEDERATION OF INDIAN TEXTILE INDUSTRY (CITI)” in 2005, in order to represent the broad-based membership of the organisation. CITI alongwith its logo was formally launched by the Honourable Vice President of India on 22.07.2005. Textiles and clothing constitute the largest industry of the country in terms of output, employment and exports. The need for an apex body representing the entire textile and clothing sector had been felt by the industry for quite some time and it is after extensive efforts that different segments of the industry could come together and form CITI. Formation of such an apex body will help us to project the textile and clothing sector properly to the domestic and international consumers and to have a coordinated approach to all national and international developments affecting the sector.
